Major Upgrades Planned for Ballyconnell Wastewater Treatment Plant

Waste Water Plant

In a significant development for the Ballyconnell community, Uisce Éireann has secured planning permission for a comprehensive upgrade of the Ballyconnell Wastewater Treatment Plant located at Doon. This project aims to modernize the facility, enhancing its efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The proposed upgrades include the installation of a manual bypass channel with a manually raked bar screen, a new storm overflow chamber, and a grit removal system. Additionally, the existing screen will be relocated upstream of the stormwater overflow. A new above-ground primary treatment facility (PFT) will be installed, and the current PFT will be decommissioned. Other enhancements include a new storm tank cleaning system, a storm return pumping station, a wash water pumping station, and full automation of the existing return activated sludge (RAS) and waste activated sludge (WAS) systems.

Waste Water PlantA GRP kiosk will be installed to house an electrical control panel, and planning also includes various ancillary site works. A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) was prepared for the proposed development, resulting in approval with 16 attached conditions.

Currently, the project is at the ‘Stage 2 Preliminary Business Case’ phase, involving detailed analysis and cost estimation. This stage will develop a shortlist of solutions to ensure the project’s success and cost-efficiency.

These upgrades are a crucial step in supporting Ballyconnell’s growth and maintaining environmental standards. The community eagerly anticipates the improvements, which promise to enhance local infrastructure and quality of life.
